Shearer, Cantona voted best players

London April 15. Alan Shearer and Eric Cantona were voted the best players of the first decade of the English Premier League.

Newcastle striker Shearer was named the top domestic player and former Manchester United forward Cantona the top overseas player in the first 10 seasons of the Premier League.

The league debuted in 1992-93. The awards were decided in an online vote by fans on the Premier League's official web site www.premierleague.com.

Shearer also won awards for outstanding contribution to soccer and for being the Premier League's top scorer. The former England captain won the title with Blackburn in 1995 and has helped Newcastle revive its league fortunes over the past six years.

Cantona helped Leeds and Manchester United to league titles. The French striker led the way for international players in England when he joined Leeds in 1991, before switching to United a year later. He stayed at Old Trafford until his retirement in 1997.

The Premier League said almost 750,000 votes were cast by fans in 184 countries. The overall player of the decade will be announced on Sunday.

"We can now sit back and reflect on a decade that has seen over 113 million fans pass through the turnstiles to watch players from 82 different countries in 34 different teams score over 10,000 goals," Premier League chairman Richard Scudamore said. — AP
