Mayawati pulls no punches

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 15. The Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati, does not believe in pulling her punches. Ever since she assumed office for the third time, she has been sending clear signals both to her political rivals and allies that she will brook no opposition.

The manner in which she has registered a slew of cases against her political archrival and Samajwadi Party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, shows she is not one to forgive or forget.

Her latest salvo is a ringing remainder to her political rivals that anyone who dares to challenge her would not be spared. The guiding principle appears to be the adage — of offence being the best form of defence.

Perhaps, Mr. Yadav and his colleagues could have anticipated the shape of things to come by analysing the measures undertaken by her ever since her coalition government began facing dissidence last year. It is another matter that many BJP leaders privately agree that Ms. Mayawati was using police to "silence" her critics, but in public they preferred to be non-committal.
