Mayawati effigies burnt

Lucknow April 15. Samajwadi Party workers today set ablaze vehicles and effigies of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mayawati, to protest the filing of cases against their party president, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and other senior leaders.

Party workers set three jeeps on fire in Gorakhpur, while in Bahraich, they clashed with police after they were stopped from holding dharnas.

The party State unit general secretary, Shivpal Singh Yadav, however, said the protestors exercised maximum restraint even though police made "all out attempts" to foil the party's programme. Reports reaching here from Farrukhabad, Mainpuri, Etah and Etawah said party workers burnt effigies of Mayawati and demanded immediate withdrawal of criminal cases filed against the SP chief and other party leaders.

The State BJP president, Vinay Katiyar, said the Chief Minister's decision to slap cases on Mr. Mulayam Singh did not augur well for the State. The BJP spokesman, H.N. Dixit, said " U.P. may go the Tamil Nadu way where vendetta has become order of the political set up." Another senior BJP leader, Kalraj Mishra, said the coalition Government should not indulge in "politics of vendetta'. — PTI
