Vegetables costlier, petrol becomes scarce

By P.K. Bhardwaj

NEW DELHI APRIL 16. Despite an assertion by the All-India Motor Transport Congress that essential supplies stood exempted for the time-being from the truckers strike, people in different parts of the country felt the pinch as prices of vegetables, fruits and other essential items soared and petrol products vanished from filling stations in some cities.

The non-availability of petrol and diesel at a number of filling stations in some cities today was a new phenomenon that belied the claims that the supply channel was unaffected.

The complaints were not confined to Chennai and some other towns of Tamil Nadu. Similar reports came in from some other States as well as the national capital.

While officials in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the long queues at filling stations could be due to the reduction in the prices of petroleum products, the Petroleum Ministry confirmed that there were some problems at some places. In Chennai and Coimbatore even the LPG movement was reportedly hit.

Though there were no "dry-outs", the officials admitted that the supply of diesel and petrol had been hit marginally in Chennai.
