Ms. Kumaratunga will make a two-day goodwill visit to Bangladesh from April 19. Diplomatic circles hinted that trade and investment might dominate agenda. They believe the visit will also cement political ties. The issues of SAARC will come up prominently during the meet. In trade, Sri Lanka enjoys an edge over Bangladesh as its export bill is $6.5 millions while Dhaka's is $3.5 millions . Bangladesh mainly imports coconut oil, palm oil, rubber and plastic items and some ceramic goods while Sri Lanka imports pharmaceuticals, jute bags, a few machinery parts and sugar. Since both the countries have got almost identical products in their export baskets, the volume of trade remains low, officials said. However, Sri Lankan investment in Bangladesh is around $90 millions mainly in hotel, restaurant and insurance sectors. Sri Lankans have invested around $90 millions in financial and other sectors here. Bangladesh has a small investment in a joint venture paper manufacturing project in Sri Lanka. There is also a proposal for establishing direct air link between the two countries.
