Road roko on April 22

Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated to the CPI (M), will organise road rokos throughout the State on April 22 protesting the withdrawal of free power supply to agriculture pumpsets.

The association secretary, S. Balakrishnan, told reporters here today that the State Government has "failed miserably" in providing drought relief to the people. Though the Government announced Rs. 1,000 an acre as relief and land tax waiver, the relief was yet reach the beneficiaries. Contrary to land tax waiver collection of tax was continuing, he alleged.

Pointing to weather forecasts that monsoon might not be normal this year also, Mr. Balakrishnan said the Government should take steps to get water from Karnataka using the good offices of the Centre and the Cauvery River Water Authority. ``Farmers should be helped to sink community borewells. It is unfair to withdraw free power supply now. Without taking horsepower as the norm, the Government should stick to the criterion of small and marginal farmers to extend any benefit in power supply for agriculture pumpsets.
