Abductions occurred during all regimes: Karunanidhi

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI APRIL 18. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, today said kidnappings by the forest brigand, Veerappan, occurred during all regimes; as such, no one could take pride that there was no abduction during one's rule.

Mr. Karunanidhi was referring to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa's statement that it was possible for Veerappan to indulge in kidnappings during his rule and it was not possible when she was in power.

Listing the abductions datewise from July 1987 to February 1996, he said all kidnappings occurred only in Tamil Nadu.

Questions which State lost in the battle against Veerappan or during which party's rule abductions occurred were not important.

After she took over in June 2001, Ms. Jayalalithaa reorganised the Special Task Force and brought it under the command of W.I. Davaram, the DMK leader said and repeated the figures for the expenditure on the special unit since 1999-2000 furnished by Ms. Jayalalithaa herself, for comparison.
