SC orders early eviction of squatters in Kolkata

New Delhi April 22. Bringing down the curtains on a long-drawn litigation, the Supreme Court has asked the Calcutta High Court to take steps at the earliest for implementing its order of eviction of squatters on railway property in Kolkata and those around Rabindra Sarobar.

A Bench comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Justice B.P. Singh gave the direction while disposing of an appeal filed by the Union Government challenging a High Court order asking the Railways and the West Bengal Government to provide sanitary facility as an interim measure. The Centre had contended that as there were lawful orders to evict the squatters from the railway property, the High Court ought to have directed the eviction rather than providing them with benefits.
