Elders discuss discos

By Our Special Correspondent

New Delhi April 22 . The mood in Rajya Sabha turned light today when some members showed concern at the possibility of ban on discotheques in ITDC and five star hotels in preference to classical music and dancing.

When Vijay Darda (Ind), sought details during question hour, the Chairman, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, asked him if he knew how many discos were running in various hotels in the country. As Bimba Raikar (Cong) sought a ban on discos, Shabana Azmi (Ind), opposed it and as several members sought to join in, the Chairman observed that he would not allow `disco dance'' in the House.

When R.P. Goenka (Cong), said he had visited a disco 18 years ago, the Chairman asked him what made him give up. ``Age factor,'' the member said amid laughter. And when poet Balkavi Bairagi (Cong), rose to make an observation, Mr Shekhawat remarked, ``you too''!

In his reply, the Minister for Culture and Tourism, Jagmohan said the Government's policy was to project a healthy image of India's culture. There was no bar on discos if they were within the ambit of the Musical Performance Act. ''The law takes care of indecent exposure,'' he added, addressing Ms. Raikar's concern.
