Mahatma Gandhi prize for cleanliness to be revived

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry April 22. The Department of Adi Dravidar in Pondicherry will soon revive the Mahatma Gandhi prize scheme for cleanliness of Adi Dravidar households.

The scheme would comprise a cash award and household utensils to Adi Dravidar families.

This was announced suo moto in the Assembly today by the Welfare and Industries Minister, M. Chandirakasu. He said the scheme was first introduced in 1993-1994.

A committee comprising local leaders and the legislator of the constituency would assess the beneficiaries and pay Rs. 150. The amount of cash award was raised to Rs. 300.

In each constituency, some 30 houses would be selected for the scheme named after the Father of the Nation.

However, the scheme was converted to operate as a programme to develop basic amenities in the housing colonies of the Adi Dravidar families in 2000-2001.

Now the scheme would be restored to the old pattern of presenting cash awards to individual households and an increased prize amount would be available, he said.
