Govt. employees on the warpath again

CHENNAI April 22. Government employees, including teachers, have decided to revive their agitation against the withdrawal of several benefits which they so far enjoyed. A meeting of the dozens of government employee unions and associations held here on Tuesday decided to start their agitation with rallies on May 8. If their demands were not conceded, the members of these associations would start an indefinite strike from July 2, a meeting organised by the Federation of JACTTEO-GEO- COTA-GEO resolved here today.

A statement signed by the convenors of the Federation, Abdul Majid, K. Pandurangan, K. Suriyamoorthy, T. Subramanian, N. L. Seedharan, K. Balasubramanian and V. Swaminathan, said rallies would be held on Wednesday at all district headquarters.

On May 8, mass picketing would be held in all district headquarters. The employees and teachers would start meeting the public to explain the reasons for their protest on June 18. On July 28, preparatory meetings would be held at district headquarters, to plan the indefinite strike. The agitation so far spearheaded by the Joint Action Council of Tamil Nadu Teacher Employee Organisations and the Government Employee Organisations (JACTTEO-GEO) has been strengthened with support received from another organisation, viz., the Confederation of Teachers and Government Employees Organsiations (COTA-GEO) and leading to the formation of the Federation of JACTTEO-GEO-COTA-GEO.

The 12 lakh employees of the State Government are protesting the curtailment of superannuation and pension benefits, withdrawal of the facility to encash unavailed earned leave and stoppage of D.A. rate hike.
