PM must clarify

Sir, — As the former Prime Minister, Chandra Shekhar, has stated, Prime Minister Vajpayee must clarify the reason for the abrupt change from the earlier stand of obduracy vis-à-vis Pakistan. Third party mediation in Indo-Pak. talks as demanded by Pakistan will be detrimental to the coming parleys if at all Islamabad reciprocates by dismantling terrorist training camps and stopping cross-border terrorism. If the U.S. actually wants peaceful ties between India and Pakistan, it should take coercive action to end infiltration in Kashmir.

K. Ramachandran,
Usilampatti, T.N.

Sir, — There are frequent appeals, some from well-meaning persons such as the former Prime Minister, I.K. Gujral, for the resumption of cricket matches between India and Pakistan to improve bilateral ties although they never explain how this is possible. No doubt such a match creates feverish excitement in both the countries, but is it healthy? The relations between the two countries are such that these matches are looked upon as proxy wars.

S. Rajagopalan,
Chennai
