Presiding over the valedictory function of the two-day national seminar on "Internationalisation of Indian higher education - quality dimensions", he said the move to reduce funds for higher education was ill-advised. Dr. Thimmappa said the country could ill-afford to neglect higher education and warned those advocating such a move that a situation may come when the country would have to depend on foreign professionals such as engineers. Taking on those who wanted more funds for primary education at the cost of the higher education, Dr. Thimmappa said if this "ill-conceived idea" was pursued, then even primary education would not survive. As of now, only one per cent of the entire money spent on education went for higher education, which was not sufficient to meet the challenges. N. Srinivasan, Deputy Director-General, CII, which co-sponsored the seminar, and M.K. Sridhar, convenor of the VSS Trust spoke. V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice-Chairman, University Grants Commission, was present. The university Registrar, K.C. Rama Murthy, said 310 delegates from 25 universities, including vice-chancellors, attended the seminar.
