A costly-lesson: Malaysian Minister

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI APRil 25 . While profusely apologising for an "isolated incident" of shabby treatment meted out to Indian software professionals by Malaysian enforcement police authorities, the country's Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government, M. Kayveas, today invited software professionals of Indian origin, especially those from South India, to come and work in the "multimedia corridor" being created to expand the IT industry.

Mr. Kayveas, who is currently on a private visit to Tamil Nadu, told a press conference here that "Malaysia was looking forward to India for complimenting its multimedia corridor as 60-80 per cent of the workforce came from India".

Referring to the recent incident involving the Indian software professionals, the Deputy Minister said "it was a costly lesson for us and the episode marred the relationship. But we will have to move on to work together and I am confident that the Indo-Malaysian historical ties will grow further in all fronts — culturally and industrially".

Asked whether the Malaysian low-cost housing expertise could be shared in India, especially in tackling problems of slum tenements, he said there was great potential in this low-cost housing sector as they had proven experience of building 800 sq foot tenements as Malaysia had targeted itself to become a "squatter-free nation" by 2005.
