Making it clear that the Government's announcements in no way affected the students, the Minister, however, told the Assembly that the students' representatives had been invited for talks. "However, they have till now not responded to our invitation. But, I appeal to them to come for talks," he said when MLAs raised the issue of medicos' stir during the zero hour. Stating that the Vellore MLA's son was also among the striking postgraduate students, he urged the parents of the medicos to advise their wards to return to college. Mr. Semmalai said the medicos had gone on strike suddenly without giving prior information to the Government. The striking students today observed fast in front of their colleges and raised slogans in support of their demands, which included a ban on opening of more private medical and dental colleges and reservation of seats for NRIs. While the hospitals attached to the medical colleges in the city were not affected by the strike, those in the districts started feeling the impact of their absence from duty.
