Maharashtra to release water into Krishna

By Our Staff Correspondent

BELGAUM APRIL 25. The Maharashtra Government has made it clear that it will consider Karnataka's request to release water into the Krishna only after water is released into the Indi canal from the Alamatti reservoir to flow into Maharashtra.

The Deputy Commissioner, B.S. Palaksha, speaking to presspersons here on Friday, said the Chief Secretary of Karnataka had persuaded his counterpart in Maharashtra to take steps to release water into the Krishna in view of the severe drinking water crisis in Athani and Raibag taluks of Belgaum District. Although Maharashtra was requested to release 1.50 tmcft. of water, it had agreed to release only 150 tmcft. of water on the condition that Karnataka first release an equal amount of water from the Alamatti reservoir to supply water to Sholapur District of Maharashtra.

As per the agreement, 150 mcft. of water from the Alamatti reservoir was released through the Indi canal two days ago, Mr. Palaksha said. Maharashtra was expected to release water into the Krishna on Friday or Saturday to ease the drinking water crisis being faced by around 50 to 60 villages in Athani taluk and those around Kudachi, Mr. Palaksha said.

The Deputy Commissioner said the water released would be used only for drinking purpose and not for irrigation. Therefore, officials had been asked to patrol the river bank to check any misuse of water.
