DPCC meeting to decide poll strategy

NEW DELHI APRIL 26. Gearing up for the electoral battle ahead, the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) president, Subhash Chopra, has convened a meeting of block and district presidents this coming Monday to chalk out a detailed mass contact and awareness programme for the coming weeks which will include extensive coverage of all Assembly constituencies by senior party leaders.

Stating that the party was fully geared to meet the challenge posed by communal and casteist forces, Mr. Chopra said the meeting would focus on the grey areas and wherever there was need to tone up the functioning of the party. The block and district presidents, he said, would be entrusted responsibility of holding regular meetings and interacting with the party workers and elected representatives in order to get a feedback on what all needs to be done to counter the opposition.

Mr. Chopra said as part of the follow-up of the April 28 meeting, a detailed mass contact programme would be chalked out to highlight the failures of the BJP-led Central Government and achievements of the Congress-led Government in Delhi. In addition, senior party leaders would be asked to fan out across the Capital to hold meetings and be part of this mass awareness programme. "We will also apprise the people of the misdeeds and scams of the Vajpayee Government and how during this regime anti- people and anti-farmer policies were being followed which had resulted in price rise, unemployment and weakened internal and external security situation,'' he added.

At the same time, Mr.Chopra said the Delhi unit would continue to agitate against the anti-poor policies of the Central Government and a number of agitational programmes were being planned to expose the real face of the NDA Government. Stating that the Vajpayee Government had been rocked with one scam after another, Mr. Chopra said corruption had touched a new high during the BJP rule. Accusing the Delhi BJP unit president, Madan Lal Khurana, of indulging in dramatics time and again, Mr. Chopra said a lot of hue and cry was raised by Mr. Khurana regarding his demands but nothing tangible had been achieved yet.

He wondered what had happened to the promise of Mr. Khurana and the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, to grant Statehood to Delhi. He said the much promised Bill on Statehood had not been introduced in the Budget session of Parliament as had been promised by the Delhi BJP president and sought to know why the BJP leaders were silent on this issue. The failure to introduce the Statehood Bill has once again exposed the false claims of the BJP and its leaders and said the people of Delhi will never forgive them for this betrayal.
