He told presspersons here that a special monitoring centre headed by the Additional Director of Health had been opened at the airport in Bangalore to keep a close watch on passengers arriving from countries affected by SARS on the basis of information furnished by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Mr. Thimmappa said arrangements to treat SARS patients had been made at five hospitals in Bangalore. To a question, he said there was no need to open a monitoring centre at the airport in Mangalore as international passengers did not arrive there directly. He said though one person was reported to have been affected by the disease, it had not been proved that it was a SARS case though symptoms associated with it were noticed in the patient. The patient was being treated at Manipal Hospital in Bangalore. A case reported from Kodagu had not been confirmed to be SARS. Referring to the outbreak of Kyasanur Forest Disease in parts of Tirthahalli taluk in Shimoga District, Mr. Thimmappa said the situation was being monitored by the Health Department. On the Handigodu Syndrome noticed in parts of Sagar taluk, Mr. Thimmappa said though the final report on the steps to be taken to prevent the disease was yet to be received from a team of experts, the Government had decided to open an operation theatre at the McGann Hospital here, and a physiotherapy centre at the General Hospital at Sagar.
