Pandya murder: 3 more held

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD April 26. Continuing their crackdown on Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) operatives in Andhra Pradesh, the Central Bureau of Intelligence (CBI) and the State police today arrested three more persons who are suspected to have assisted the killers of the Gujarat BJP leader, Haren Pandya.

The arrests were made in Sadasivapet town, in Medak district, on Friday night.

The arrested, Kalim Ahmed, Anas Machiswala and Shahnawaz Gandhi, belong to Ahmedabad. While Kalim and Anas were accused of providing logistical support to Asghar Ali, who allegedly shot Haren Pandya, Shahnawaz was suspected to have planted the improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in city buses during the post-Godhra communal flare-up. The IEDs went off injuring 12 passengers.

Police maintained that the trio fled Ahmedabad in the first week of April.

They pretended to be preachers, convinced the local people and joined a preaching group.

They went to Karnataka with the same group and, while preparing to leave on their return, were arrested at Sadasivapet, the Medak SP, Shikha Goel, said in a statement.

It was stated that an Ahmedabad resident (now in Pakistan), Rasool Pathi, alias Suleman, alias Sufi, motivated the trio through local leaders to carry out sabotage activities in Gujarat.

In November, Anas and Shahnawaz, accompanied by another person, went to Pakistan, via Dubai.

An ISI operative, Mohafooz, helped them during their nine-day stay in Dubai and ensured that they boarded a Pakistani flight.

In Karachi, they met Rasool Pathi and were later sent to a jungle for three or four weeks of training in handling weapons and assembling IEDs. They returned to Ahmedabad in February/March this year, and were met by Asghar Ali. On Rasool Pathi's instruction, they monitored the movements of Jagadish Tiwari, a VHP leader, and Haren Pandya.

Ms. Goel said Asghar Ali was joined by Shafi, another native of Nalgonda, and they carried out the attack on Mr. Tiwari, who, however, survived.

Shafi returned to Nalgonda, while Asghar Ali stayed on in Ahmedabad. Later Asghar Ali, with one Yunus, shot Haren Pandya in the Law Gardens locality. Kalim and Anas allegedly facilitated Ali's stay in Ahmedabad.

They also extended logistical support, including supply of weapon and the motorcycle used in the attack and identifying Pandya.
