Pondicherry
By S. Nadarajan
A resolution adopted at the party's Central Committee meeting chaired by the PCC president, V. Narayanasamy said that the monsoon failure and non availability of Cauvery water in Karaikal had led to the government declaring Karaikal a drought-hit region. Since Pondicherry was also facing drought situation and severe drinking water scarcity, the government should declare the region also drought-hit area. A section of Congress legislators had also raised the issue last week in the Assembly. The meeting was addressed by the Chief Minister, the Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam and other functionaries of the party. The tenor of almost all resolutions was that the government should not adopt a different yardstick towards Pondicherry. The meeting also issued a directive to the Government to ensure that the educated youth in Pondicherry were provided jobs in government and in private sectors. The meeting expressed concern over the fact that though there were a number of eligible persons in getting pension for the aged, the handicapped and the widows, they were not recommended by the opposision legislators for the scheme. The party would stage agitation to protest the failure of the BJP-led NDA Government at the centre in settling people's problems.
