K. Murugesan of Kathivakkam near here, complained to the District Consumer Disputes Redress Forum, that he found grains in the Limca soft drink, he got for his pregnant wife last June. Because of this, he suffered mental agony, strain and suffering, and sought compensation from the Chitra Fancy on K.H.Road, which is running a cool drinks business; the Deepak Traders at Tollgate, Tiruvottiyur, supplier, and the Hindustan Coca Cola Beverages, Nemam, manufacturer. The business establishment and the supplier remained ex-parte. The manufacturer said there was no proof of purchase of the bottle with defective contents. There was every likelihood of the bottle being opened and the cork refixed which might have led to alien substance falling inside the bottle. All products were bottled with utmost care and there was no scope for carelessness, the manufacturer maintained. The forum president, K. Mohanachandran, and member, K. Tamilselvi, said the report of the Government analyst, Food Analysis Laboratory, King Institute, showed that the sample bottle was found with the cork intact. The sediments found in the drink were found to be rice grains. The presence of extraneous matter indicated that good manufacturing practice was not followed and awarded the compensation.
