Talking to the media today, Mr. Kandaswamy said among the accused were Solaimalai's wife, Rakkammal (57), a Plus-Two student of Sri Lankan origin, Balaprasanna (20), his friend, Haji Ali (20), and Solaimalai's domestic help, Veerannan. Mr. Kandaswamy said Solaimalai, who was running a private college in which Mayoorini was studying, had rented out to her a portion of his house in the upstairs. "Solaimalai was attracted to the girl," the Commissioner said. Balaprasanna, who studied in their school and stayed in another portion of the house, was charged with stabbing the victim, at the instigation of Solaimalai. Balaprasanna's "poor performance" in a Mathematics examination and his doubts over obtaining admission to professional courses on merit was the cause for the murder. Balaprasanna took away her valuables, including a computer, a mobile phone and some money. Solaimalai's wife, Rakkammal, and Veerannan had allegedly washed the bloodstains in the floor for which were charged with "collaborating to remove the evidence". The cash and jewellery were recovered from two other friends of Balaprasanna.
