RSS-BJP strategy session planned in May

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 27. A `chintan baithak' is planned for the first three days of May in Delhi to discuss and sort out differences and plan a coordinated strategy of the Sangh Parivar for the elections ahead.

At the party's training workshop for full-time organising secretaries in Kupashera near here a week ago, the Bharatiya Janata Party president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, had said `chintan baithaks' or brainstorming sessions would be organised soon.

This effort is significant in the context of the recent outbursts against senior BJP leaders in the Government by members of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch as well as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Dattopant Thengadi of the SJM and Ashok Singhal of the VHP have been almost daily issuing statements against the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and the BJP is worried that the washing of this dirty linen of the Parivar in public can have an adverse impact on the polls.

The Prime Minister's Office has confirmed that Atal Behari Vajpayee will attend the opening and concluding sessions of the `baithak' and the RSS has said its Sarsanghchalak, K.S. Sudarshan, will also attend it.

What is not yet known is whether the `baithak' will be confined to the RSS and the BJP or will include senior leaders of other Sangh organisations such the VHP and the SJM.

Recently, the BJP leadership emphasised the need for "harmonious relations" within the extended Sangh family organisations.

That is easily understood, for the BJP has always depended a great deal on door-to-door campaigning by RSS volunteers.
