Tamil Nadu
By Our Staff Reporter
Talking to reporters here, he said that besides fighting the Prevention of Terrorism Act within the NDA, the DMK should think of quitting the Union Cabinet and the alliance if it was genuinely interested in consolidating the strength of the Opposition against the AIADMK for fighting its "anti-people and undemocratic governance." Responding to an invitation made by the DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi here this morning wherein he had stated that "if not for political reasons, the political parties in Tamil Nadu should unite against the AIADMK Government to prevent the misuse of POTA," Mr. Varadarajan said that already like-minded political parties including the Communists had extended an invitation at the national level for fighting the ``misuse'' of POTA and urged the DMK to join. "Only if the DMK decides to quit the Union Cabinet and the NDA at the earliest, i.e., much ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu would be able to consolidate people's support against the communal and undemocratic forces," he said. Recalling the statement made by the MDMK general secretary, Vaiko, arrested under the Act, that "he was reaping his harvest for having voted in favour of the POTA," and the repeated appeals made by Mr. Karunanidhi to the Deputy Prime Minister for repeal of the "draconian" legislation, Mr. Varadarajan said the CPI(M) had been emphasising this ever since the legislation came into being. Observing that the CPI(M) had decided to fight the AIADMK with ``all firmness and determination'' in the coming days for its ``undemocratic approaches in the Assembly,'' he urged the DMK and like-minded parties to join the fight on the floor of the House and refrain from boycotting it. Expressing reservations on the demand for invoking Article 356 against the AIADMK Government, Mr. Varadarajan said it would destabilise democracy.
