A police official, who was involved in the interrogation of Ali, told The Hindu that Mirza Faiz Baig, a key ISI agent, brainwashed Ali in jail in Hyderabad in 1994. "Ali, who was already being carried away by communal feelings, told us that he was influenced by Begh's discourses behind bars. Following his commands, Ali, on his release, visited Kashmir to understand the ground realities. He could have met other militants in the jail." Motivated by Baig, Ali planned to kill G. Maisaiah, a prominent BJP leader here, with the help of his friend, Farid, in 1995. He also played a crucial role in Baig's escape from police custody in the same year. "A lean person came on a two-wheeler on the Nampally court premises in filmy style when Baig was being taken to court. Before the police could realise what was happening, the vehicle was swerved in front of them and sped away. Baig was seen on the pillion. Later, we came to know that it was Ali who rode the vehicle," said a police officer. Ali was arrested by the Munugode police while he was visiting, on Baig's instructions, the grave of Baig's close friend, Fasiyuddin, who had been killed in 1991 during an encounter at Karkhana. Police recovered two pistols from his possession. After Ali's arrest, Baig was killed in an encounter at Doda in Jammu and Kashmir. Police also believe that Ali had connections with another ISI activist, Azam Ghori, who was killed in an alleged encounter at Karimnagar. Ali mainly targeted rowdy sheeters and unemployed youth belonging to his own community. Among the four arrested in connection with ISI links, Bari and Shafi were petty criminals while Nurur Rehman and Imtiaz were unemployed. The duo, lured by Ali with jobs in Dubai, was reportedly forced to undergo ISI training in Pakistan.
