Letters to the Editor
Sir, In his letter `Lesser holidays' ( April 26 ), Pawan Gupta justifies the number of holidays and feels sorry for the poor pay hike in the Fifth Pay Commission when compared to the private sector PSUs. Anyone employed in the private sector will tell you there is no job security. Nor do they enjoy the leave benefit government servants are entitled to. Go to any private office in the morning you will find the staff members seated in their respective seats whereas in any government office delayed arrival is a rule rather than an exception. Just make a phone call to a gazetted officer and ascertain whether he/she is present at the start/closing of office hours. The Government should curtail the additional holidays that have crept in after Independence. Only then can an eight per cent growth rate be achieved.
