A confusing offer: Swamy

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 28. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, today said that the offer of talks to Pakistan by the Vajpayee Government was ``confusing and complicating'' the situation.

``It reflects the usual insincerity of the Hindutva forces and appears to have been made on U.S. pressure. No Prime Minister of India should offer to talk with Pakistan, unless there is basic clarity that the Pakistan Government can be a partner in the peace process and India is ready to make a commitment to strengthen the hands of the Pakistan President, Gen. Musharraf, to carry forward the peace process'', Dr. Swamy told a news conference.

However, he said, the BJP-led NDA Government was obviously ``badly divided and confused'' on how to deal with Pakistan. Dr. Swamy also criticised the ``healing touch'' policy in J&K, terming it a ``disaster'', destabilising the operations of the security forces. Dr. Swamy alleged that the names of at least 17 Indian politicians figured in the list of people who were financed by the ousted Iraqi president, Saddam Hussein. The list was with the United States.
