Father killed for govt. dole

By Luv Puri

JAMMU APRIL 28. In a State where crimes in the guise of terrorism are not so uncommon, patricide of a new kind has come to light.

In the militancy-hit village of Salooni in Beni tehsil, Kathua district, an unemployed youth has allegedly killed his father and dubbed it a terrorist attack to get government dole.

When police went to the scene of the crime after the youth, Rajinder, reported his father Girdhari Lal's death at the hands of armed terrorists yesterday morning, little did they anticipate that it would turn out to be a case of patricide.

Soon after the preliminary investigations into the death on the basis of Rajinder's statements, it became evident that he had tried to take advantage of the conditions prevailing in this remote militant-hit belt, Manish Kumar, SHO (Bani), told The Hindu.

"A burst of bullets had been fired on the left side of Girdhari Lal's chest but what struck as odd was that the firearm used was a country-made one. Militants are known to use sophisticated weapons, say an AK-47 or better," the SHO said.

It also came to the knowledge of the police that Rajinder's relations with his father had soured of late.

Upon sustained interrogation, the son confessed to his crime.

Police say that the youth must have killed his father to get a government job.

In Jammu and Kashmir, kith and kin of victims of militancy-related crimes get relief in the form of doles and government jobs.
