``We propose to hold elections as scheduled (at the end of the normal term next year). But we have started preparing for the elections because we have a lofty objective of winning 300 seats for the BJP and two thirds majority for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). I know it is difficult, but not impossible,'' Mr. Naidu told a press conference at Kovalam near here. The BJP president said the Prime Minister, A. B. Vajpayee, would lead the party in the polls. The poll plank would be good governance and development. The promise would be to turn the country into a developed nation, if the people give the party a full mandate. The slogan would be: "for a strong, stable and prosperous India, let us strengthen the BJP''. The organisational structure of the party was being strengthened to achieve the election goals. The Congress, he said, had failed to achieve the development of the country though it had ruled the country for 47 years. It also created problems such as terrorism and separatist tendencies. On the other hand, the NDA Government made progress in several sectors such roads and telephones and welfare of women. He said that there were no plans for new alliances in Tamil Nadu. The DMK would continue to be the ally of the BJP. Mr. Naidu said the Ram temple could not be built at Ayodhya as the BJP had not come to power on its own. There was no agreement on building of the temple under the NDA agenda. The temple could be built only if there was consensus or a court order or law for the building of the temple. ``Building of the temple was an issue dear to our hearts. But one of the three things is needed for its fulfilment.'' He said no Hindu would agree to the contention of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader, Asok Singhal, that the BJP had betrayed the Hindus in this respect. His statement showed that the BJP and the VHP were separate organisations. There was no Sangh Parivar though the media often talked of it. "Neither the BJP nor the RSS has ever talked of the Sangh Parivar. ``We are all nationalist organisations working in different fields.'' He said there was no political significance in the recent meeting between Mr. Vajpayee and the senior Congress leader, K. Karunakaran. "If there was anything political about it, the Prime Minister would have informed me.'' He said no Congress leader from Kerala had approached the party for an alliance. "We are not in the habit of poaching,'' he added. Mr. Naidu denied any scandalous involvement of the BJP leader, Pramod Mahajan, and the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, in the Rs. 250-crore deposit allegedly made by the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam in a sick company in Maharastra. He said the organisational elections in the BJP at the State level would be completed by September 30. The notification for election of national president would be issued in October. The process would be over by December. The tradition in the BJP was to elect the national leaders by consensus. In Kerala, an agreement has been reached at the conference of district and State level office bearers on Monday that the elections of the State president as well as the district presidents would be by consensus.
