HC bar on B. Arch admissions

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI April 28. The Madras High Court has restrained the Anna University from admitting students to the first year of Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) course without following the norms of the Council of Architecture (CoA).

Ordering notice to the university on petitions filed by the CoA and the Indian Institute of Architects (IIA-Tamil Nadu chapter), Justice Prabha Sridevan said that until final orders were passed, no student who wanted to pursue B. Arch, should be admitted to the merit quota or management quota unless the issue of conducting the Aptitude Test in Architecture (ATA) was resolved.

The judge posted the case for June 18 and asked the university to file its counter.

The petitioners sought a direction to restrain the university from conducting the TNCPEE until the ATA was made a part of the entrance examination insofar as the B. Arch admission was concerned. They said the CoA, as the governing authority for architecture education, had framed guidelines for admission to the 5-year full time architecture course, including a specification that the ATA should be conducted by universities offering B. Arch course. However, the Anna University had decided not to conduct the ATA. If the test was not conducted, the B. Arch degree of the university would be de-recognised and the candidates passing the examination would not be entitled to practice as architects or take up an employment, they said.
