Rain lashes districts, respite for residents

By Our Tamil Nadu Bureau

MADURAI APRIL 28. The city continued to receive rainfall for the second day today, which brought down the mercury level, providing relief to the residents. The maximum temperature recorded in the city was 35.8 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 24.2 degrees Celsius. Madurai city received 16.6 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, ending 8.30 this morning.

The widespread rainfall improved the level at the Periyar dam by 0.6 feet. The level stood at 111.60 feet with an inflow of 752 cusecs. The Vaigai dam too received a meagre inflow of 10 cusecs and the level stood at 32 feet.

Rainfall received in other places (in mm): Peranai - 85, Andipatti - 78, Kuppanampatti - 75, Sathaiyar dam - 40, Periyar - 37, Manjalar dam 34, Uthamapalayam and Veerapandi 27 each, Vaigai dam - 18, Marudhanadi - 5, Madurai Airport 3.2 and Tekkadi - 3 mm.

Tiruchi city and its surroundings received mild showers this afternoon. The drizzle lasted for 30 minutes in several areas and was preceded by gutsy winds. The summer showers, however, flattered to deceive as the city residents were hoping for thunder storms in the wake of rising temperatures over the past fortnight.

Tirunelveli experienced sharp showers last night for 15 minutes and mild drizzle this evening.

Power supply in some parts of Palayamkottai was interrupted last night following a technical snag in a transformer. However, the supply was restored immediately.

Coimbatore city experienced heavy showers for nearly four hours this evening, which led to flooding of arterial roads. While the rain provided relief to the residents, flooding led to traffic snarls.

Showers, for three days early this month, led to the storage in the Siruvani dam rising by 12 cm. Amid fast depleting storage, the city continued to pray fervently for good spells of summer showers till the southwest monsoon sets in.
