Govt. will challenge Central notification

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI APRIL 28. The Tamil Nadu Government will challenge the April 22 notification of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests, banning demolition or reconstruction of any public use building falling under Coastal Regulation Zones without prior permission.

The Advocate-General, N. R. Chandran, today made this submission before the First Bench of the Madras High Court, which is hearing a batch of petitions against the government decision to flatten the Queen Mary's College here and construct a modern Secretariat complex there. After the matter was posted before the Bench `for being mentioned', the Additional Solicitor-General of India, V.T. Gopalan, submitted a copy of the notification and said the Centre would file a detailed counter-affidavit.
