Uphaar judgment hailed

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 28. It might have taken years for justice, but the recent Uphaar verdict seems to have brought the "right'' reaction from all quarters. Hailing the recent High Court ruling on the Uphaar incident, the President of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, P.K Jain, today expressed the hope that the judgment would usher in greater accountability and careful joint initiatives by both the public and private sectors to ensure greater public safety and convenience.

While the private sector always bears public outrage in such incidents, this judgment rightly brings to light the usual apathy of the public administrative bodies as well as flawed implementation of rules, which actually play a key role in causing such incident, he stated.

``We hope that the judgment sets a precedent to correctly identify the responsible officials and treat them equally, even if they belong to the public administration,'' Mr. Jain added.

Not restricting the burden only to private enterprises, this judgment puts the guilt on civic authorities too, Mr. Jain said. The High Court held the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board responsible for improper maintenance of the transformer and the Municipal Cooperation of Delhi and the Licensing Department for their careless execution of their basic duties.
