Among those present at the function to unveil the 18-feet high bronze statue of Shivaji sculpted by Ram Sutar were the Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat; the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee; the Deputy Prime Minister, L. K. Advani; the Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi; and the Leader of the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi. Many MPs who attended the function donned saffron turbans and joined in the war chants associated with Shivaji. The statue of Basaveshswara was donated by Sharanabasavappa Appa, head of the Sharanabasaveshswar Sansthan (Gulbarga).
