This Day That Age
A most unusual offer made by U.S. General, Mark Clark, in an attempt to bribe Communist pilots in Korea to fly MIG fighters over to the Allies, provoked strong reactions in Britain even in right-wing quarters. Speaking in the House of Lords last night, Lord Chorley attacked the offer as a "dastardly proposal". He asked whether the British Government had authorised the attempt "to bribe airmen to commit treason to their own country" and went on: "In the whole history of warfare, this is one of the most terrible things that has ever happened. The lives of people are at stake in these matters, and there is a great feeling throughout the country that a terrible mistake has been made."
