By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE APRIL 29. The health authorities of the New Mangalore Port Trust, who are monitoring the crew of foreign vessels visiting the port for any cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), have referred blood sample of a Chinese crew member to the National Institute of Virology, Pune, after he developed mild fever on arrival here on Tuesday. He was on m.v. Maritime Talent.

The chief medical officer of the port, D. P. Kudalkar, told The Hindu that the ship with a crew of 22 on board sailed for the port on April 14 and berthed here on Monday.

The crew member, who showed signs of fever, was put in isolation at the sick bay of the ship, and the local port and district health authorities informed, Dr. Kudalkar said.

He said the blood sample had been sent to the Pune institute and the port authorities were expecting a report soon.
