They paid floral tributes and consoled the bereaved family. The Governor, S.S.Barnala, in a message said he was deeply grieved over the demise of the veteran freedom fighter and Gandhian. His abiding faith in Gandhian values of simplicity and purity were remarkable, Mr. Barnala said adding that Vavilala was a strong advocate of ethical standards in public life. He conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family. The APCC president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, Leader of the Opposition, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, and the chief spokesperson of the party, K. Rosaiah, in separate statements, recalled the contribution of Vavilala to various fields and said he sought to cleanse public life of all its ailments. Vavilala's courageous life was exemplary and his values should be the guiding principles in life. The AP unit of the BJP condoled the death of Vavilala and said he was a guiding light to many politicians. His contribution to the spread of Telugu was significant, the national president of the BJP, M.Venkaiah Naidu, said in a statement. The CPI State secretary, S.Sudhakar Reddy, and the CPI (M) State secretary, B.V.Raghavulu, mourned him in separate statements. Vavilala's life was a shining example for the younger generations to follow they said. It was Vavilala who introduced the resolution in the Assembly in 1958 seeking to recognise Telugu as the official language, they recalled. Chairman of the Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh, I.Venkat Rao, said the Telugus had lost a respectable elder in the death of Vavilala. The Vice-Chancellor of Sri Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, G.V.Subrahmanyam, in a statement said Vavilala's name would be permanently etched in the history of Andhra Pradesh. The university held a condolence meeting and observed a two-minute silence. The Bharat Gnana Vignana Samithi, of which Vavilala was vice-chairman in 1991 and Jana Vignana Vedika expressed grief. In separate statements, Jnanpeeth awardee C. Narayana Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Acharya N.G.Ranga Agricultural University, I.V.Subba Rao, and former MP, Y.Sivaji, condoled the death and conveyed sympathies to the bereaved family members. B. Baburao Verma, president, Freedom Fighters' Forum for Social Justice, in his condolence message described Vavilala as a stalwart who did yeoman service to people, especially women and recalled his contribution to the anti-arrack movement led by women in the State.
