90 p.c. of stolen jewellery recovered

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI APRIL 29. Police today claimed to have solved the sensational Rs. 1-crore heist, which left jewellery shop owners in the city shaken. Over 90 per cent of the jewellery was recovered from a house at Tirupur, a senior police officer said. However, no arrest has been made.

A Tiruchi-based businessman, Subash Chand Jain, was proceeding in his friend's car to Egmore Railway Station with the jewellery when he was waylaid. The car driver along with his associate who was also travelling in the same car kidnapped Mr.Chand. They attacked him with a knife, pushed him out of the car at Pallikaranai and escaped with the booty. Mr. Chand was hospitalised with cut injuries on his shoulder.

Following the incident, the City Police Commissioner, K.Vijay Kumar, formed special teams to track down the culprits. A police team, which went to Tirupur, found the stolen jewellery in a house. Preliminary investigation revealed that the car driver was an ex-convict.
