Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By Our Staff Reporter
``We are perfectly all right. There is no panic here,'' the MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramchandran, told The Hindu over telephone from Singapore. She said there was a lot of hype over SARS, but the places visited by the MCH team were safe. The five-member team went round various places in Philippines, Malaysia and Singapore to know first-hand the unique municipal reforms introduced there. The study tour was facilitated by the Administrative Staff College, Hyderabad, with the support of the UN Habitat, Japan. Stating that their tour was successful, Ms. Chitra said she would submit a pro-poor `City Development Strategy' after consultation with various Government departments. A major city consultation will take place at the ASCI on May 2 and 3, wherein over 70 key stakeholders are expected to participate. Mary Jane Ortega, Mayor of San Fernando City in Philippines, will address the session. The MCH team visited many remote places such as San Fernado in Philippines, Kaula Lampur, Putrajaya, Ciberjaya, Subhangjaya in Malaysia and Singapore. These cities have initiated unique municipal reforms and poverty alleviation measures, besides health and sanitation schemes.
