Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Chief Justice of India, V.N. Khare has said the country has only 13,000 judicial officers at present against the 75,000 officers needed to clear the backlog of pending cases (Kalam calls for corruption-free society, April 27 ). He said this in the presence of the President. At the same meeting, the Attorney-General, Soli Sorabjee, made an appeal to lawyers to volunteer their services to help the nation by becoming judges for an ad hoc period of six months to reduce the backlog. During the freedom struggle, many eminent lawyers like Bhullabai Dasai sacrificed their practice to help the country gain freedom. India now needs a large number of judges to dispose of the pending cases and eminent lawyers should come forward and accept the challenge in the larger interests of the nation.
