Letters to the Editor
Sir, You have rightly pointed out in your Editorial `Chauvinist politics' ( April 29 ) that Bal Thackeray's return to regionalism is a recognition of the Shiv Sena's failure to grow at the national level. And, to make up for this `loss' and to consolidate his position at the regional level, Mr. Thackeray has fallen back on his tried formula of whipping up Marathi sentiments against the `outsiders'. The `Me Mumbaikar' programme is not only unconstitutional but is bound to set a bad precedent. It is true that Mumbai is bursting at the seams with the steady inflow of migrants from other parts of the country. But igniting linguistic chauvinism is not the solution.
