Letters to the Editor
Sir, This has reference to `Bholu to stay with Railways' ( April 24 ). It is heartening to learn that Bholu, the guard holding a hand signal lamp, will remain a permanent mascot for the Indian Railways. So far, the importance of the guard has not been recognised by either the Railways or the public. The guards category has not even been considered for the safety awards. The category is one of the big three in the Railways (the others being drivers and station masters). People consider the guard as a doll placed at the fag-end of the train, showing signals when needed, without knowing their importance, and only very few approach them for help. A guard is not only responsible for the safety of the train but also for the safe transportation of the parcels and also for the safe and comfortable journey of the passengers.
