Indian camp continues in full swing

BANGALORE April 30. The training schedule of the Indian shuttlers for the World Championship continued in full flow despite a remote possibility that the event could be cancelled on account of SARS. The championship will be held at Birmingham from May 12 to 18.

The chief coach of the squad, Vimal Kumar, discounted the possibility of the championship getting cancelled. He told The Hindu: "So far, there has been no communication either from IBF or England Badminton Association hinting at such a possibility (cancellation).

In fact, there has been no restriction on travel to England from any Far Eastern country and the tournament should go on as per schedule,'' he said.

Vimal expressed satisfaction with the camp which began at the KBA Stadium here from April 24. "There is full attendance and all the players are looking good. We are working on-court skills, technique and tactical play. Besides the players also have a physical workout at the gym as well as running practice,'' he said.

The players went through a physical assessment test at SAI on Tuesday, Vimal said.

The Indian squad for the World meet, which basically has open events, includes Abhinn Shyam Gupta (men's singles) and Aparna Popat (women's singles), Jason Xavier and Jaseel P. Ismail, Sanave Thomas and V. Diju (men's doubles), Shruti Kurien and Jwala Gutta (women's doubles).

The camp will go on till May 7 and the team leaves for Birmingham the next day.

Some of the Indian players who are not participating in the camp will figure in the Mauritius Open scheduled from May 2 to 4. The three players are India's No. 2 woman B.R. Meenakshi, Trupthi Murgunde and Arvind Bhatt.
