6 file nominations for CPP polls

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 30. The Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) elections, scheduled for May 8, has invited nominations till date from five members for the two posts of the Lok Sabha secretary and one for the lone office of the Rajya Sabha secretary.

The five members who have filed the nominations for the post of secretary are Vilas Muttemvar, Jagmit Singh Brar, Sona Ram, Rameshwar Dudi and G. S. Basavaraj.

For the Rajya Sabha, Subbarami Reddy has filed his nomination for the post till date. suspend

Two Rajya Sabha members, Suresh Kalmadi and the outgoing treasurer, Santosh Bagrodia, have so far filed their nominations for the post of treasurer. However, with three days still remaining for the filing nominations, more Congressmen are likely to join the fray.

The elections for the office-bearers and the 19-member executive committee of the CPP were last held in September 2000.

A demand for holding them was made during the first half of the budget session, and the party leadership authorised Ambika Soni and Priyaranjan Dasmunsi to assess the view of the MPs from both houses. While a section of MPs did not favour upsetting the present arrangement, as only a year was left for the general elections, the majority view was for fresh elections.

The party's set-up in Parliament consists of the chairperson of the CPP who is elected by MPs from both houses.

The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, is the chairperson of the CPP.

According to the CPP constitution, the chairperson nominates two leaders — one from each house — besides separate deputy leaders, chief whips and deputy chief whips.

While the chairperson's term is co-terminus with the term of the Lok Sabha, the office-bearers and the executive committee members are supposed to be elected every two years.

These include the three CPP secretaries — two from the Lok Sabha and one from the Rajya Sabha and a treasurer.

The executive committee, which is also elected, comprises 12 members from the Lok Sabha and seven from the Rajya Sabha.
