Labour Ministry to hold more discussions on reforms

By Our Staff Correspondent

NEW DELHI APRIL 30. The Union Labour Ministry will hold further discussions before pushing through new legislations to bring in labour reforms in the country.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the consultative committee on labour reforms held here today after some members wanted more deliberations on the issue. The next meeting of the committee would be held after the end of the current session of Parliament.

Accepting the demands of the members for more discussions, the Union Labour Minister, Sahib Singh Verma said he was already in touch with the trade unions to solicit their cooperation and views to make the legislations more pragmatic, though he did agree to hear from all the members specific views on the recommendations of the National Labour Commission that would form the basis of the labour reforms.

In his opening remarks, the Minister said that several important steps had been initiated in the past five decades to improve the working conditions of the labourers, particularly in the unorganised sector. He said the consultative committee was trying its best to bring in legislation for the workers in the unorganised sector in the current session of Parliament.

Appreciating the recommendations of the National Labour Commission, Mr. Verma said it has comprehensively covered various aspects of labour and issues relating to labour reforms.

Listing steps taken to adopt the recommendations of the Labour Commission, he said Social Security Legislation, Labour Management Relations Bill, Umbrella Legislation for Workers in Unorganised Sector, Unified Law on Wages,

Law for Workers in Small Scale Units, Amendment of Contract Labour (Regulation and Abolition) Act and Amendment in Emigration Act of 1983 were all aimed at safeguarding the interests of the workers.
