Malleswara Rao holds slender lead

KOCHI APRIL 30 . After a sticky and stubborn draw against Kerala's seasoned O.T. Anilkumar, Andhra's J. Malleswara Rao (6.5 points) maintained his slender half-point lead in the B.C. Cochin all-India FIDE-rated chess tournament at the Ernakulam YMCA International House here on Wednesday evening.

Malleswara Rao moved into sole lead this afternoon after beating the overnight joint leader, Kerala's P.V. Girish, Anilkumar and Tamil Nadu's B.T. Muralikrishnan were in the second spot with six points after the seventh round.

Meanwhile, the top boards witnessed a spate of draws. The players signed the peace treaty on seven of the top ten boards this evening.

But there was disappointment for T.R. Shanmuganathan. The Madurai 13-year-old who was on a giant-killing run the last two days, lost both his rounds today. The five-day, nine-round tournament ends on Thursday.
