SAI gets tough with dopers

By Our Sports Reporter

NEW DELHI APRIL 30. As the claims about a `dope-free' Hyderabad National Games went bust following the disclosure of 22 positive cases, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has authorised unannounced room-checking of the sportspersons using its residential wing.

In case any banned drug and or syringes are found, the SAI proposes to take stringent action against the offender. Further, the offender will not be permitted to utilise the SAI facilities in future.

The SAI has issued a notice, to be displayed in all the SAI stadia, residential units and training centres, which authorises the assistant director of the residential wing and other officers to make such checks.

The checks could be carried out of the rooms and also belongings of any trainee or the camper residing in the SAI premises.

The notice is signed by the SAI Secretary K. Narsimha and the SAI has requested all its units to laminate and display the same at appropriate places. The Nehru Stadium residential wing sported one such notice on Wednesday afternoon.

The SAI has further given the same powers to the concerned coaches also. The coach can also make a check of the belongings of any trainee staying or training at the SAI campus.

The immediate provocation for such an exercise, apart from the adverse publicity caused by the recent dope cases, was the regular retrieval of syringes, needles and vials from the Nehru Stadium premises. Quite a collection was made and, interestingly, it included empty vials of the popular steroid, nandrolone.

At the local level, where there is no control, something like nandrolone can be `safely' taken since there is no testing. But then, the athlete runs the risk of being caught in future, say once he or she gets into the National camps. Nandrolone is detectable up to around eight to ten months and beyond one year, if injected along with other steroids. Trafficking in banned drugs can lead up to a life-ban.
