They just don't want to leave DMRC

NEW DELHI APRIL 30. When they were shortlisted for work with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation around five years ago, most of the officials coming in from Indian Railways were not very sure if they had made the right move by opting for the deputation.

But five years down the line -- when time has come for renewal of their terms -- by not opting to revert back to the parent cadre, most of the officials have indicated how working with Delhi Metro has been a pleasure.

``None of the Head of Departments would be moving out of DMRC. Only some of the lower ranks have opted out owing to personal reasons,'' said a senior official, adding that whatever movement has been there has been on a routine basis. Though there will no en masse movement of officials, the terms of almost all officers will be renewed this year.

Incidentally, the move by the Railways personnel working for DMRC also has a lot to do with the work culture in the organisation. Despite getting a political head in the form of BJP leader, Madan Lal Khurana, DMRC continues to work in a very professional manner.

The strings are firmly placed in the hands of the Managing Director, E. Sreedharan, who has earlier been instrumental in making the Konkan railway a reality in record time and thereafter has ensured that the first phase of the ambitious Metro project also got going on time.

``It is the professional manner in which the works are planned and executed which make working with the Metro a pleasure,'' said a senior DMRC official who has recently got an extension of two years.

Drawing salaries, perks and all other benefits like other Railway officials, those on deputation in Delhi Metro feel no need to revert to the parent organisation for the time being.

"It is a good place to work in and those professionally inclined really feel no need to move out.''

The Delhi Metro incidentally has about 70 per cent of its staff drawn from the Indian Railways while the remaining come from various civic agencies like CPWD, PWD and even NDMC.

Another aspect about the Delhi Metro, that appears to be endearing all the employees to it, is the easy and prompt availability of funds for all planned tasks. With neither the Centre or the Delhi Government holding back the funds, the calmness in the DMRC headquarters at NBCC Place also reflects on the approach of the staffers.
