Karnataka-Bangalore
By Our Special Correspondent
After the observance of the birth anniversary of B.R. Ambedkar on April 14 as a major event, it was the May Day function held today which received urgent attention. On the instruction of Mr. Poojary, some of the ministers in Bangalore and party leaders worked hard to turn May Day into a major event. A large shamiana was erected on a vacant plot behind the Congress Bhavan and a large number of people were brought in vans, overwhelming the party workers. Mr. Poojary himself said he had instructed the PCC office at 11 p.m. last night to organise a big meeting. He thanked the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies and President of the Bangalore City Congress Committee, Ramalinga Reddy, and M. Krishnappa, MLC, for organising the show. However, the function started late and was rushed through as another May Day function had been organised by the Government at the Vidhana Soudha.
`Be vigilant'
Mr. Poojary called upon the Congress leaders and workers to remain vigilant as parliamentary elections might be held much before the expiry of the term of the Lok Sabha in October 2004. Mr. Poojary, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha, predicted that the elections might be held in February 2004. He expressed doubts about the BJP-led NDA government completing its term. Mr. Poojary said the next elections would be fought on issues concerning the future of the people and not that of any leader, including the AICC President, Sonia Gandhi, or the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna. Mr. Poojary alleged that the NDA government was disinvesting from profit-making public sector undertakings. The BJP leaders, who swore by "Swadeshi", were allowing foreign-made products to be sold in the country. Indian agriculture was exposed to danger from such a policy, he added. Mr. Poojary said he would take up the question of starting programmes for the benefit of workers with the Chief Minister. The State INTUC President, N.M. Adhyanthaya, spoke against globalisation.
