Workers organise rallies

By Our Staff Reporter

Pondicherry May 1 .Trade unions of various political parties celebrated the May Day in the Union Territory of Pondicherry today. All government offices and departments remained closed.

Special meetings were held by trade unions and rallies were taken out to mark the celebration.

Leaders of the INTUC, the CPI, the CITU, the AICCTU, the Anna Trade Union Peravai, the Lok Sakthi Thozilalar Union, the United Trade Union Congress and a host of labour outfits issued statements greeting the workers on the occasion.

The Anna Trade Union Peravai leader, A. Ravindran, said the day was marked by volunteers urging the authorities to establish the free port and the Special Economic Zone in Pondicherry without delay. The introduction of the uniform floor rate of tax had already started showing its impact on the industries and workers were also facing the serious implications of the negative outcome of the new taxation measures.
